Really? Pants on backwards??
When I picked Owen up from Steph's today I noticed his pants were on backwards. Hmmm...I thought...this may need to be investigated.
Mommy: Owen...are your pants on backwards?
Owen...huh?
Mommy: Pants...are your pants on backwards?
Owen (looks befuddled and then looks at pants): huh?
Mommy: Owen! Really! ARE...YOUR...PANTS...ON...BACKWARDS?
Owen (shrugging): maybe
Mommy (sighing): where is the tag?
Owen: Ummm...(pulls out waistband)...not here.
Mommy (annoyed now): Did Daddy see you in your pants this morning?
Owen: Uh huh. (looking a little suspicious as he hears the tone of my voice change)
Mommy: Hmmm...get in the car.
Really...on backwards? You would think one of the males in my household would have noticed the child's pants were on backwards. It is things like this that give us women things to complain about at happy hour. Sigh.

"But she didn't tell me NOT to..."
This afternoon when I arrived at Steph's house to pick up the kids, I was greeted with an interesting surprise...Owen had a big cut right smack in the middle of the front of his shirt. After I gaped at it for awhile, the conversation went something like this:
Mommy: What happened to your shirt Owen?
Owen (blank look): What?
M: Your shirt...did you cut it?
O (thinking really hard): No...well, I accidentally cut it.
M: How do you "accidentally" cut a shirt?
O: I had paper by it and I just "whoops" cut it. (big gesture of "whoops" with hands)
M (frowning): Really...just "whoops" huh?
O (looking a little worried now): Um...well...
M (using teacher look): Owen, did you cut your shirt on purpose?
O (big eyes & innocent look): No...it was on accident.
M (using teacher look AND voice): Owen...
O (so quietly I almost couldn't hear): yes
M: What? You did cut it on purpose??? OWEN!
(Abby wisely leaves the house at this point to avoid any trouble..smart girl!)
O (looking sort of contrite): Well...yes.
M: What did your teacher say?
O (thinking hard): Well, she didn't say NOT to cut it.
M (trying not to laugh): Get in the car Owen. Wait until I tell your daddy about this.
Really...this child is way too smart for me already. What am I going to do when he is a teenager???

Girl time
The boys have gone off the the Dallas Stars game, so the little lady and I are going to have some girl time. We made refrigerator strawberry pie, have cold drinks in hand, and are off to watch High School Musical (not sure if we are going to watch 1 or 2...or both).

I like these movies--they are fun and make me laugh. It is good sometimes to watch a movie without profanity, nudity, and violence. You can just relax and enjoy the ride!
The girl likes Zac Efron--she just giggles when he comes on the screen. I don't think he #1 in her book--that is reserved for the Jonas Brothers--but he is WAY up there!

She has made me solemnly swear that I will purchase HSM 3 when it arrives in stores on February 17th. I told her I would think about it...but I have already planned to get it and have another movie night...maybe we'll let the boys join in, but only if they can stand the singing!!

A logical SuperBowl prediction?
Owen has made his SuperBowl prediction...the Pittsburgh Steelers will win the game! Now, you may ask, does Owen follow football? Has he been watching the pre-game analysis and has made a good, educated decision? The answer would be no. He is basing his game prediction on the fact he has a Ben Roethlisberger Fathead on his wall. His logic is "if he's on my wall, he must be good."
Love to see that man logic developing in my son...

Book Notes
I've been remiss in posting this week because I have been occupied (maybe obsessed??) with reading two really great books!
The first is The Shack by William Peterson. This was chosen because it is the book we are using for study during Sunday School. I would recommend it to others, but can't really give a reason why. I liked it, but didn't love it--I really wanted to love it. It is one of those thinking books that make you uncomfortable at times--not always what you look for in a book, but sometimes necessary for growth. I think that the whole missing child story hit a little too close to home (the teacher/mother in me can't get past that kind of thing) and I spent most of the rest of the time I read the book thinking about other children who have suffered the same fate. Unfortunately, the news is full of such things--Baby Grace in Galveston, a little 2 year old boy in Dallas who was beaten to death for neglecting to say "Yes, Sir" to his step-dad. I find that I can't just shove those stories to the side. They make me, as a teacher, more aware of my students and the subtleties of their lives. So...long story short--the book's deeper meanings may have been lost on me.
The second book is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. This is actually a re-read--I read it several years ago with some students. It is a sweet story and it makes me feel good! I felt I needed something to balance the heaviness of the first book, so a little hero mouse was my choice. Abby read this book recently and loved it! Definately a kids' book, but well worth any adult's time!
Next up is Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This is the book club book for this month...not one I would readily pick. But that is the beauty of a book club--you get challenged to read things you wouldn't always normally choose! I'll let you know what I think later.
