"But she didn't tell me NOT to..."

This afternoon when I arrived at Steph's house to pick up the kids, I was greeted with an interesting surprise...Owen had a big cut right smack in the middle of the front of his shirt. After I gaped at it for awhile, the conversation went something like this:

Mommy: What happened to your shirt Owen?

Owen (blank look): What?

M: Your shirt...did you cut it?

O (thinking really hard): No...well, I accidentally cut it.

M: How do you "accidentally" cut a shirt?

O: I had paper by it and I just "whoops" cut it. (big gesture of "whoops" with hands)

M (frowning): Really...just "whoops" huh?

O (looking a little worried now): Um...well...

M (using teacher look): Owen, did you cut your shirt on purpose?

O (big eyes & innocent look): No...it was on accident.

M (using teacher look AND voice): Owen...

O (so quietly I almost couldn't hear): yes

M: What? You did cut it on purpose??? OWEN!

(Abby wisely leaves the house at this point to avoid any trouble..smart girl!)

O (looking sort of contrite): Well...yes.

M: What did your teacher say?

O (thinking hard): Well, she didn't say NOT to cut it.

M (trying not to laugh): Get in the car Owen. Wait until I tell your daddy about this.

Really...this child is way too smart for me already. What am I going to do when he is a teenager???
